Substitution for Single words / Single words for longer Expression

 

This discussion is about the one word substitution for all the West Bengal & CBSC Board's students & also for the competitive exams. 

It's a part of Grammar. I have  translate the phrases in  Bengali meaning & pronunciation  &  so that all of my Bengali  viewers  easily remembered this.

                                                   PART I

           ★ What is one word substation?

One Word Substitution simply means using a specific word replacing a wordy phrase or sentence and making it shorter, concise and clearer to understand.

It is one of the integral parts of vocabulary. It simply means that a sentence has to be replaced with a single word. This area requires a good vocabulary to solve the questions well. Questions based on one word substitution are often asked in various competitive exams.

       ★ ( বাংলায় যাকে আমরা এক কথায় প্রকাশ, অথবা বাক্য সংকোচন বলে থাকি। একাধিক কথায় প্রকাশ না করে মনের ভাবকে যখন প্রয়োজন অনুসারে একটি মাত্র শব্দের দ্বারা প্রকাশ করে থাকি, তাকেই বলে এক কথায় প্রকাশ বা বাক্য সংকোচন।)

Miscellaneous (  বিবিধ):

1)To increase speed or hasten  progress ( গতিবেগ বাড়ানো): Accelerate - এক্সালারেট

2)An earnest desire for some achievement( উচ্চাকাঙ্ক্ষা) : Ambition  -অ্যাম্বিসান

3) A list or plan of things to be done ( কাজের তালিকা)  : Agenda- এজেন্ডা

4) Having several possible meanings ( দ্ব্যর্থক)  : Ambiguous - অ্যাম্বিগিউয়াস

5) To cut off a part of the body : ( ব্যবচ্ছেদ ) : Amputate -এম্পুটেট

6) A person who works for another to learn a trade ( শিক্ষানবিশ)  : Apprentice -  অ্যাপ্রেন্টিস

7) Without acknowledging or mentioning the author worker  etcetera 

   ( অপ্রকাশিত নাম অথবা অজ্ঞাত নাম ) : Anonymous -অ্যানোনিমাস

8) A covered  area where birds are kept ( পাখিদের নিবাস)  : Aviary - এভিয়ারি

9) A place in which bees are kept ( মৌমাছিদের নিবাস )  : Apiary - এপিয়ারি

10) Someone who shoots with a bow and arrow ( ধনুর্বিদ) : Archer - আর্চার

11) A person who designs buildings ( নির্মাণকারী) : Architect -আর্কিটেক্ট

12) That can be heard ( শ্রুতিগোচর)  : Audible - অডিবল

13) Listeners and viewers  collectively ( দর্শক ও শ্রোতাবৃন্দ) :  Audience - অডিয়েন্স

14) An account of a person's life written by himself  (আত্মজীবনী) : Autobiography -অটোবায়োগ্রাফি

15) One who studies the history and culture of ancient societies  (পুরাতত্ত্ববিদ) - 

       Archaeologist - আর্কিওলজিস্ট

16) One who is all powerful ( সর্বশক্তিমান)  : Almighty -অলমাইটি

 17) Extreme hate for a thing  (  তীব্র ঘৃণা) : Abhorrence - অ্যাভোরেন্স্

18) Run away with stolen things ( আত্মগোপন করে থাকা)  : Abscond - অ্যাব্সকন্ড

19) Period between boyhood and adulthood ( বয়ঃসন্ধি) :  Adolescence -এডোলেসেন্স

 20) Mix something impure with oil, milk or food ( ভেজাল মিশ্রিত ) : Adulterate -এডালটারেট

21) Word composed of the initial letters of the name of the things  

       (অন্য শব্দের আদ্যক্ষর  দিয়ে তৈরি করা শব্দ)  : Acronym -অ্যাক্রোনিম

22) A woman who has never been married (চিরকুমারী) : Spinster - স্পিনস্টার

22) A man who has never been married  ( কুমার) :  Bachelor - ব্যাচেলর

23)  A garden path, a narrow passage between or behind buildings ( সরুগলি) : Alley -এ্যলে

24) A book published each year containing information on a particular subject ( বর্ষপঞ্জী) : 

      Almanac - অলম্যনাক

25) Someone equally skillful in right and left hand (সব্যসাচী) : Ambidexterous - এ্যম্বিডেক্সট্রাস

26) Concern for the happiness and welfare of others (পরার্থবাদ)  : Altruism -আল্ট্রুইজম

27) Quality of being friendly (সহৃদয়তা) : Amiability - এমিয়াবিলিটি

28) Smallest kind of living creature having only one sale (জীবাণু বিশেষ) : Amoeba -অ্যামিবা

29)  Short entertaining account of an event from the speaker's own experience  ( সংক্ষিপ্ত সত্য কাহিনী)         : anecdote -এনেকডোট

30) The pointed end or top of a thing ( চূড়া  অথবা শৃঙ্গ) : Apex -এপেক্স

31) Total destruction and end of the world ( রহস্যের উন্মোচন ) : Apocalypse -অ্যাপোক্যালিপস

32) A place where weapons and military equipment are stored ( অস্ত্রাগার) : Armoury -আরমারি

33) Criticism with comments that may damage one's reputation (কুৎসা বা কলঙ্ক) :

       Aspersions - আ্যসপারজন্স

34) That which is very foolish or ass like ( গর্ধব সুলভ) : Asinine -এ্যসিনাইন

35) Substance that contracts ( সঙ্কোচক) : Astringent -অ্যাসট্রিনজেন্ট

36) Situation in which no law or rule operates (নৈরাজ্য, অরাজকতা ) : Anarchy - এ্যনার্কি

37) With feelings and ways of one's  primitive ancestors (  পূর্বপুরুষের চরিত্র ও চালচলনের অনুগামী):         Atavistic -এ্যাটাভিস্টিক

38) Decrease in size and strength of any organ or limb due to illness ( ক্ষয়িষ্ণুতা) : Atrophy - এ্যট্রোফি

 39) Examination of a dead body by cutting it open to find out the cause of death (ময়না তদন্ত) :                     Autopsy -অটোপ্সি

40) That which is bright blue (গভীর নীল)  : Azure -এ্যজার
